To make up doll

·       Cut a piece of calico 40cm x 25cm and fold in half (20cm x 25cm).Place doll pattern on the calico and trace around with a sharp pencil (this is the sewing line), making sure you have 1 body, 1 pair of legs and 2 arms and leave 1cm between each piece (as per diagram).

·       Sew each piece on the pencil line (leave ends open) and then cut out leaving a small, neat seam allowance. Clip around curves and turn the doll right side out.

·       Stuff each arm firmly up to the “elbow”, using small amounts of stuffing at a time and pushing it in with a skewer (be careful not to push the point of the skewer through the end of Lalie’s, or your fingers). Stitch across the arm at the ‘elbow’ position marked on the pattern. Fill top of the arm lightly. Stuff the legs making sure the ‘feet’ are filled evenly. Stitch down the centre of the legs at the position marked on the pattern.

·       Attach the legs to lower edge of the body

·       Firmly stuff the head and body.

·       Topstitch the lower edge of body closed, making sure the top edges of the legs are enclosed.

·       Firmly attach the arms to the upper sides of body, making sure the ‘thumbs’ are
pointing downwards.

·       Find the centre of the face and mark with a water erasable marking pen. Lightly
mark the positions of eyes, nose and mouth using the pattern as a guide.

·       Colour the face. Use black Pigma pen for the eyes and eyelashes. The nose is drawn with brown Pigma pen and red Pigma pen is used for the mouth.
Using a blue pencil add a touch of colour around the pupils, with a red pencil
colour the cheeks.

·       To make the wig. Cut a rectangle of cardboard 5cm x 10cm. Wind wool around the cardboard 10 times. Thread a needle with approx. 30cm length of wool, insert needle between wool and cardboard close to the edge and pull through, leaving a 5cm tail. Knot tightly around wound wool, knot again and then cut approx. 5cms from knots. Cut through the wound wool close to the opposite edge, making a tassel. Repeat this procedure to make 2 tassels of hair.
Attach each tassel to the seam line at the top of head, above the eyes. When your doll is wearing her hat trim her curls to shoulder length.

Clothing Instructions

Floral fabric

·       From the floral fabric cut –
rectangle for skirt 18cms x 56cms
rectangle for bodice 10cms x 11cms

Fleecy

·       Cut a rectangle for the jacket 18cms x 22cms. Fold into quarters (9cms x 11cms) as shown. Place jacket pattern on fabric and cut out. Open flat and make a slit up the front of jacket.

·

·       Cut 2 x circles with 9cms diameter for the hat.

Sewing instructions

Dress

·       Fold bodice rectangle in half (5cms x 11cms). Cut out neck opening. Open bodice flat and make a slit for back opening. Fold under 5mm at neck edge and hem using a running stitch. With right sides together join lower 2cms of bodice side seams, fold under 5mm around armholes and hem with a running stitch.

·       Turn under 5mm and hem one long edge of skirt. Run a gathering thread along top of skirt and gather to fit bodice. With right sides together join bodice to skirt. Remove gathering thread.

·       Join back seam of skirt. When you have dressed your doll topstitch closed the back of bodice.

Jacket

·       With right sides together sew side and underarm seams of jacket. Clip around underarm curve and turn jacket right side out. Stitch around all raw edges of jacket with blanket stitch, using red cotton perle embroidery thread.

Hat

·       Using red perle cotton blanket stitch around outer edge of one circle.

·       Run a gathering thread around the edge of the second circle and pull up to fit doll’s head. Stitch hat top to inner circle of the brim. Fold back brim at the front and using yellow perle cotton stitch 5 detached chain in a circle to form a daisy, form a 3 wrap French knot in the centre making sure you catch the brim to the hat to form the ‘turn up’.

Finishing instructions

·       With a sharp pencil lightly mark around your doll’s ankles where you would like the doll’s shoes to finish. Using Jo Sonia gold oxide paint shoes on your doll. When the paint is completely dry brush on a coat of PVA craft glue over the shoes, this gives the shoes a lovely shine (optional). Sew a seed bead on each shoe to represent a buckle.

·       Hem the skirt. Dress your doll and topstitch the back of the blouse closed.

·       Using green perle cotton form 5 ‘flower stems’ in your doll’s hands positioning them to join the two hands together. Work 3 three wrap French knots between your doll’s hands to complete her posy.

Congratulations! You have finished your Lalie doll.
