Mitred border corners provide a professional looking
finish to many quilts, and should be used when they complement the overall
design of the quilt. For multiple borders, sew the strips together first,
before attaching them to the quilt as one unit.
Step 1. To find the required length of the border
strips first measure the width of the border and multiply this by two, add
this measurement to the width of the quilt, now add 2". Cut 2 border
strips this length. Now add twice the border width to the length of the
quilt and add 2". Cut 2 strips this length for the side borders
eg. width of quilt before border = 65"; width of border
to be added = 6"
i.e. 65" + 6" + 6" + 2" = strip 79" long. Cut 2 strips
79" long (width measurement).
Repeat these steps for the length of the quilt.
Step 2. Centre and pin the border strips in place.
Begin and end the seam 1/4" from the raw edges, backstitch to secure. Press
the seams towards the quilt top.

Step 3. Lay the quilt top right side up on ironing board and fold
the end of each border back onto itself, right sides together, starting at
the corner of the quilt and form a 45 degree angle (see diagram).
Press to form sharp creases.
Step 4. Fold the quilt on the diagonal with right
sides together. Align the raw edges of the border strips, and the creases
and pin in place. Stitch along the crease line beginning at the point where
the border seams and the quilt all meet.
Step 5. Press the seam open. With the quilt right
side up check the accuracy of the mitre by placing the straight edge of your
quilting ruler along the edge of your quilt, aligning the 45 degree angle
line of your ruler on the seam line. If the corner is flat and square, trim
the excess fabric from the borders to a 1/4" seam allowance.
